The Maurice Gavin Observatory at Northey

15 Oct 2026
Sutton Grammar School

Earlier this term, Sutton Grammar School was delighted to host the official opening of the Maurice Gavin Observatory at the school's North Cheam Sports Ground.

The observatory has been named in honour of Maurice Gavin, a longstanding member of the Ewell Astronomical Society who dedicated 50 years of service to the organisation before his death in 2018. The observatory is home to Maurice's own 12-inch reflecting telescope, helping to ensure that his passion for astronomy continues to be celebrated.

The observatory was formally opened by the Deputy Mayor of Epsom and Ewell, Councillor Julie Morris, who performed the ribbon-cutting ceremony. In attendance were members of the Ewell Astronomical Society, Maurice's family and invited guests. Speeches were given by Anita King, Chair of the Ewell Astronomical Society, Ron Johnson, the Observatory Project Manager, and Ben Cloves, Headmaster of Sutton Grammar School.

Sutton Grammar School is extremely grateful to the Ewell Astronomical Society for its partnership in bringing this exciting project to life. We are delighted to host the observatory at our sports ground and look forward to seeing it flourish as a valuable resource for astronomy enthusiasts and the wider community for many years to come.
