From SGS Law Society to Commercial Law

14 Oct 2026
Sutton Grammar School

Earlier this term, ex SGS Law Society member, Harry Swift, returned to school to share with eigtheen current members of the society his experience and advice on building a successful career as a commercial solicitor. Harry's visit had been eagerly anticipated because this has, traditionally, been a very popular early career destination for members of the society. After graduating from the University of Leeds with a first-class degree in law, Harry secured a training contract with the UK law firm Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer. He has also successfully completed vacation schemes at two US law firms. Drawing on these experiences, Harry described the work of a commercial solicitor, including in areas such as litigation; international arbitration; and, competition. In contrast to his chosen career route of the training contract, Harry also explained the alternative path of undertaking a solicitor apprenticeship, before sharing a few tips on how best to successfully manage the balance between working and simultaneously studying for professional examinations. The students appreciated both Harry’s informative presentation and the equally informative and good-humoured manner with which he answered their wide-ranging questions. We would like to thank Harry for giving so generously of his time.
