This year's Culture Week was a huge success and participation across the school was fantastic. Students really embraced the daily activities, with recipe sharing, favourite national games being discussed, the cultural delights of international film highlights and even a Sixth Form led debate on the 'meaning of cultural identity'. Students really enjoyed the interactive map, where they could place a sticker on the countries they came from and it really showed what a wonderfully diverse community we are. Many thanks to the Year 12 students who led the activities so enthusiastically and especially for their amazing work with the fashion show - it was simply brilliant and a real highlight of the week. Below are the thoughts of some Year 9 students on what they enjoyed about Culture Week – Mr Robson.
Albery Akrobor 9W - SGS Culture Day 2025 was truly amazing. When I walked into school at 8am. In front of me stood the sight of many members of the SGS community, each of them wearing picturesque and unique clothes. One thing I found cool was the fact that there was a huge world map and people from all over the world were allowed to place stickers where they were from. It was brilliant!
Otul Fahad 9W - I enjoyed the International Oscar's Day. I had fun learning about different countries' best movies. It was interesting to hear about other people's national movies. Each film reflected different traditions and were unique in their own way.
Alex Warrick 9W - I enjoyed hearing facts and recipes from some of my classmates. It was brilliant that the school is so full of diverse cultures and people from all different backgrounds.
Haziq Rizwan 9W - My favourite day was Friday - It was a day where we embraced our culture and celebrated other people's culture. It signified our diversity and how unique we each are and symbolised our togetherness. We also learned about other people's culture, like how they dress, celebrate and express themselves.
Jayden Tharakan 9W - I enjoyed International Evening on Saturday. I loved the variety of foods and all the different stalls. However, the thing I liked most was coming in with my cultural outfit on and not being the only one wearing one, showing the diversity in our school.
