The UK Mathematics Trust is a registered charity whose aim is to advance the education of children and young people in mathematics. It organises national mathematics competitions and other mathematical enrichment activities for UK secondary school pupils. There are three levels covering the secondary school range 11-18 years. Last academic year, 610 students from Sutton Grammar School took part in these challenges.
Mathematical Olympiad for Girls
3 Further Mathematics students from Year 13 took part in this challenge. Bhavya Patel 13B was awarded a Certificate of Merit.
Senior Mathematical Challenge
150 students from SGS took part in the first round, 131 Further Mathematicians from Years 12 and 13, 19 Single Mathematicians from Years 12 and 13.
The UKMT awards the top-scoring 66% of participants Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates in the ratio 3:2:1. Students that are ‘Best in Year’ or ‘Best in School’ will also receive a badge to denote this on their certificates. Congratulations to all participants from SGS, they achieved 37 golds, 64 silvers and 32 bronzes.
37 students qualified for follow-on rounds, 33 for the Senior Kangaroo and 4 for the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1. 9 Senior Kangaroo students were awarded the Certificates of Merit. Govan Tompkins 13Z, Boaz Ting 12 ET, Lincoln Chow 12 A were awarded the Certificates of Merit in British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1.
Intermediate Mathematical Challenge
185 students from SGS took part in the first round of this competition from Years 9, 10 and 11. As with the senior competition gold, silver, bronze, best in year and best in school certificates are awarded. The UKMT awards the top-scoring 50% of participants Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates in the ratio 3:2:1. Congratulations to all participants from SGS, they achieved 101 golds, 57 silvers and 16 bronzes.
86 students qualified for follow-on rounds, 69 for the Intermediate Kangaroo and 17 for the Intermediate Olympiad. Charlie Schutte was the best in school with a score 135/135. There are different Olympiad papers for each year group in the Intermediate Olympiad. Alexandru Bucur 11G was awarded a Certificates of Distinction, bronze medal and a book prize in Maclaurin Olympiad. Hugh Bacon 10G was awarded a Certificate of Distinction in Hamilton Olympiad. Charlie Schutte 9M was awarded a Certificate of Distinction, a silver medal and a book prize and Harry Kirk 9G was awarded a Certificate of Distinction in Cayley Olympiad. 11 students were awarded the Certificates of Merit in Grey Kangaroo challenge and 14 were awarded the Certificates of Merit in Pink Kangaroo challenge.
Junior Mathematical Challenge
275 students from SGS took part in the first round of this competition from Years 7 and 8. Again, gold, silver, bronze, best in year and best in school certificates are awarded. Congratulations to all participants from SGS, they achieved 158 golds, 71 silvers and 35 bronzes.
115 students qualified for follow-on rounds, 101 for the Junior Kangaroo and 14 for the Junior Olympiad. In Junior Mathematical Olympiad, Benjamin Laferton 7T and Oliver Leach 7M were awarded the Certificates of Distinction, bronze medals and book prizes; Alexander Apoolingum 7G, and David Vulpe 8M were awarded the Certificates of Distinction. 33 students were awarded the Certificates of Merit in Junior Kangaroo challenge.
