The 29th of February has become well-known as a day where stereotypical traditional gender roles are challenged worldwide. A day when women propose. A day where love blossoms. A day of romance. So it seemed quite apt that the Year 11s along with their English Teachers had a planned theatre trip to watch the iconic and romantic tragedy ‘Romeo & Juliet’ at Shakespeare’s open-air Globe Theatre at London Blackfriars. ‘Romeo & Juliet’ is one of the four GCSE English Literature texts currently being studied.

The historic theatre boasted a distinct recreation of the past with architecture which was a marvel to behold. The unique thatched roof and the classic Tudor beams contrasted with the urban concrete jungle surroundings.

Whilst many of our Year of 11s were ushered to the main seating area, a small group of us were escorted away from the main cohort…

“Here’s the Lord’s Box!”

The room was unveiled. Past the crimson velvet curtain was a private chamber, historically reserved for nobles. The walls were embellished with paintings; the seats were sumptuously soft. However, the view was nothing to boast about. (Pictured) As our teacher had told us in class, rather than offering the best view, the box seats were more about being seen.

The fast-paced, 90-minute play was dramatic and heart-wrenching with some inventive modernisations including impressive BMXing and a percussion ensemble. Overall a fantastic afternoon was enjoyed by everyone!

Our thanks to Mr Roy for organising and for the staff and parent volunteers who made the trip possible for all 135 year 11s.
