Young Enterprise Day

As a young person myself, I can decisively say that the youth of today face looming, unanswered questions that dictate the course of our lives. Which A-levels should I pick? What career will I pursue? And importantly, what’s for dinner?

These questions are profound and deeply personal, and although the latter remains ever elusive, Year 10 have discussed the other two during the recent Careers Week. One such opportunity to do so was the Young Enterprise Day on Thursday.

The day revolved primarily around developing and marketing a unique brand for a certain company, ranging from fitness programmes to milkshake bars. This process involved creative  work in designing logos and products, as well as technical aspects such as setting budgets or comparing prices, and key presenting skills during the product pitches at the end of the process, effectively demonstrating both how to successfully elevate a product pitch and how not to present when aiming for a professional demeanour.

Beyond this, however, we also developed an understanding of the key skills sought after by employers. We developed our leadership, taking control of our groups; teamwork, playing essential roles in our respective ‘companies’; innovation, designing original ideas for our products; and a host of similar competencies. I would describe this understanding, and the knowledge of our own strengths and weaknesses in these departments, as the most important lesson of the day. This has given us the confidence to stride into our futures with self-assurance, ultimately an unrivalled strength that all of us will take advantage of in whichever path we follow.
