Year 9 have been studying Macbeth this term, and earlier this month watched a performance by Quantum Theatre in the school hall to support their learning.
Mahid, 9W reflects on the production:
It was a sensation, to see the performance and the main hall transformed into a piece of art. Walking in, it all appeared slightly unseeming. Three wooden stands, A partition of cloth, some lights and a cheap audio projector. However, this is the point. The main highlight of the performance WAS the way each object was arranged. The limited material became the basis of the performance, an excellent production.
The large cloth as I remembered it separated the stage into two parts, the previous stage illuminated by head on light, creating silhouettes on the cloth, to showcase secondary scenes and thought. The projector was used on moments of the battlefield displaying armies on the cloth.
There was also an excellent distribution of roles, the actors each had multiple roles, and often across different genders, with a rather short amount of time to change behind the makeshift stage.
The key given highlights were the imaginative using of prop and staging. The well-rehearsed transitions and efficient distribution of character roles created an engaging atmosphere. I am sure the rest of my year agrees, that this production will remain one of the most distinctive highlights of Year 9.
