Students practice their language skills with Spellian programme

Spellian is an online language‑exchange platform that offers students the opportunity to practise real conversational French and Spanish with native speakers, with German expected to follow. Spellian will be available for all Year 10 and Year 12 students of French, Spanish, and hopefully German from October 2026. Below are the reviews of Spellian by two students who have recently taken part in the programme.

As soon as I was informed by my teacher of the Spellian online learning platform and that I could enroll, I went home and applied. The spellian online language learning platform where I could enhance my knowledge of the French language, seemed quite interesting to me and I thought that it would help support my listening and speaking as well as my overall comprehension in French. So far, it has!

The spellian programme consists of weekly Zoom meetings with a student learning English, who is also a native French speaker. Weekly conversations take place in both French and English with engaging conversations based on the materials found online on the website.

My partner is in year 9 or La quatrième in the French schooling system and I have found our conversations to be fulfilling.

Overall, I would thoroughly recommend this opportunity to all languages students who want to improve in their respective language, and even above the academical aspect of spellian, I believe that it is quite beneficial to one’s communication skills, I would recommend to apply as soon as possible due to the quite limited availability.

s someone who felt languages can often be difficult at times, I found Spellian to be very helpful in allowing me to improve not only my Spanish speaking and listening, but also my reading skills. It offers a weekly lesson on any day of your choice, in the morning, afternoon or evening, and lets you connect with someone your age who is fluent in the language you are trying to learn at school.

So far, my experience has been very good. My partner is always helpful when I struggle and makes sure that I properly understand what we're learning before we move on. There is a variety of things that we do each week, from looking at music and cultural diversity in different countries, to reading about interesting topics and discussing with each other, both in Spanish and English. It also offers many resources next to the questions that your partner will ask, so that you have an idea of what you could say, and it also encourages you to develop your answers, making you truly improve with various skills. The concept of learning Spanish in this way really appeals to me because it offers a different way to learn, rather than just the traditional way of copying or completing exercises in a textbook.

Overall, I'd really recommend Spellian to anyone who wants to improve their Spanish, or just enjoys speaking the language. You personally connect with your partner and I always look forward to having my lessons, which I do on a Saturday. If you aren't already, take a look and consider, because it's really worth it.
