The Suttonian: a tradition that connects generations

Sutton Grammar School

When students join Sutton Grammar School, they become part of a family that spans 126 years of history. This community includes current pupils, former students and staff who have contributed to the school’s rich heritage.

The latest edition of The Suttonian (2024–25) has now been distributed to the pupils who ordered a copy, and we hope you will agree that it offers a remarkable retrospective of the previous academic year. Most of the articles have once again been written and edited by the students themselves, showcasing both their talent and their pride in our school community.

This edition is the 226th in the publication’s history. Although the school is 126 years old, earlier decades saw several smaller editions produced each year, which accounts for the higher numbering. The Suttonian was first issued in 1909 and, during the First World War, became a cherished link to home for former students serving overseas. One Old Suttonian wrote from the trenches:

“I have just received the School mag from home, whilst in the trenches, and am very pleased to read all about things at School. I can assure you that I have appreciated the mag, much more since I left school than I did whilst at school.”

We hope that today’s students will treasure their copies in the same spirit. Each edition captures a moment in school life that will one day become a source of nostalgia. We encourage pupils to keep their Suttonian safely on a bookshelf, ready to revisit with friends in years to come.

The Suttonian is more than a magazine; it is a lasting record of the experiences, achievements and memories that bind generations of Sutton Grammar School students together.
