On the 1st December 2025, a wide range of talented student musicians gathered in the drama studio. The room was filled with various instrumentalists - saxophonists, cellists, guitarists, pianists, etc. - all warming up and chattering amongst themselves, buzzing with anticipation as the clock ticked closer to seven, when the Sutton Grammar Christmas Concert was going to commence.
The audience was packed, with not a single free seat in the hall, a sight which I’m sure brought some nerves to members of the orchestra, who were first to perform. However, they all kept their cool and delivered an energetic opening performance of ‘Sleigh Ride’, kicking off the concert as well as the Christmas season. The orchestra then performed ‘Pink Panther’, a classic jazzy piece from the film franchise of the late 20th century.
The night continued the way it started, with a string of remarkable performances from soloists and ensembles showcasing the product of their hard work over the past term. But arguably as memorable as the musical performances were the comperes, Samit and Girik, both in Year 13. Suitably dressed in Santa and Elf outfits, the comedic duo provided light entertainment between performances throughout the evening, adding to the festivity of the night.
Another highlight of the first half was the Lower School Voices, showcasing the talent (and bravery) of Year 7-9 students in the choir. This ensemble performed a touching rendition of ‘When I Grow Up’ from Tim Minchin’s musical Matilda, beginning with beautiful solos from Chun Win Tu (9T) and Hridhaan Ganger (8L). The first half ended with the Acapella group, essentially a choir group for the very best vocalists amongst the older students, making music solely with their voices: typically accompaniment by the lower parts and rich harmonised melodies by the higher parts. Their repertoire consisted of the electronic dance song “Wake Me Up” by Avicii, followed by another Christmas song, ‘Holly Jolly’ to end the half the way it started, welcoming the Christmas season by spreading joy to the audience through song!
To kick off the (shorter) second half, the Jazz Band performed Paul Simon’s ‘You Can Call me Al,’ an iconic song from the album “Graceland”. Half an hour later, once again, the Lower School voices were called; this time they sang ‘Winter Wonderland’, another Christmas Classic. To conclude the spectacular night, the Jazz Band played yet another Christmas Classic ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree’, whilst all performers filed onto the stage before everyone sang the chorus. After the last chord was held from the Jazz Band, the audience erupted into a round of applause, congratulating all the participants. All those on stage felt proud of themselves for participating in the Concert; I know I will look back on this event fondly.
A special thanks to the Music department (Mr Doherty, Mr Brook and Ms Gunn) for their unwavering dedication towards this concert, as well as other members of staff who gave up their time to contribute. Furthermore, the night would not have run so smoothly without the help of the PTA - who, amongst other things, served the audience and performers with delicious refreshments - as well as the Year 13s that made up the lighting crew. Finally, well done to all the students for their brilliant performances, which accumulated into a memorable SGS Winter Concert.
