Over the course of last half term, House Cubing was run for the first time in several years at SGS. For those unaware, speedcubing involves solving various twisty puzzles (including the well-known 3x3 Rubik’s cube) as fast as possible. This year, House Cubing involved the 2x2x2, 3x3x3, 4x4x4, 5x5x5, Pyraminx and Skewb events. The final scores were:
Manor had by far the most entries and won by a wide margin – this shows that participation matters for house events. I was very impressed by the overall popularity of the competition – there were 139 entries from 71 different people. Well done and thank you to everybody who participated. Congratulations to the following in particular:
On Monday the 24th of February, SGS received a visit from Daniel Evans, a competitive speedcuber who runs a cubing shop, speedcubing.org. Daniel, an ex-student of Sutton Grammar School, organised the first House Cubing event here several years ago. In his recent visit, he was selling a collection of twisty puzzles and talked with the cubers of SGS and some of his past teachers. Daniel also offered to help run cubing fixtures against other schools and I hope to organise at least one such fixture this year or next.
